How do I use it?
Locate the wooden spoon included in your jar. Use it to place approximately 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of Mouth Mud onto a dampened toothbrush. Brush as usual.
Each jar lasts approximately 3–4 months, depending on how much you use and whether multiple people are sharing a jar.
Important: Do not dip a wet toothbrush directly into the jar—doing so will turn your Mouth Mud into actual mud!
What are the ingredients?
Xylitol • USP Grade Kaolin Clay • Calcium Powder (Calcium carbonate) • Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) • Yarrow Powder (Achillea millefolium) • Clove Powder (Syzygium aromaticum)
What does it taste like?
Mouth Mud has a very mild flavor—lightly sweet from the Xylitol, with a subtle undertone of Clove. The flavor is gentle and not heavy or overpowering, making it suitable for those who prefer a more natural brushing experience.
Both the Original and Charcoal Mouth Mud share this same mild flavor profile.
Our Mint Mouth Mud includes a subtle mint note—not overwhelming, just enough to add a gentle freshness to your routine.
What Makes Your Mud Different?
When it comes to oral care, most “natural” products leave a lot to be desired—cheap cosmetic-grade clays, questionable ingredients, and little to no transparency about what’s actually in the jar.
At Wild Wood Apothecary, we take a completely different approach. Mouth Mud is crafted to the same standard we hold for all our herbal creations: pure, tested, and trustworthy.
Here’s what sets us apart:
We use USP Grade ingredients — not cosmetic grade.
Our Kaolin Clay is USP grade, meaning it meets stringent standards for pharmaceutical use—not just skincare. Many products on the market use untested cosmetic clay, which may contain elevated levels of heavy metals or impurities not suitable for daily oral care.
Every batch is fully lab tested for heavy metals.
We test every batch of Mouth Mud, and results consistently show levels well below FDA and cosmetic safety thresholds:
Lead: 4.34 µg/g → 57% below the FDA limit
Arsenic: 0.198 µg/g → 93.4% below the cosmetic safety threshold
Cadmium: 0.172 µg/g → 65.6% below the general cosmetic limit
Mercury: 0.014 µg/g → 98.6% below the FDA limit
We verify all herbs.
We botanically verify our Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) to ensure you’re getting true, traditionally used botanicals—not unidentified powders or cheap substitutes.
What we never include:
• No cosmetic-grade clays
• No fillers, gums, or whitening agents
• No harsh abrasives — our clay gently polishes without damaging enamel
• No essential oils or flavor oils — just whole plant powders
• No synthetic preservatives, additives, foaming agents, or fluoride.
Why this matters:
Your mouth is one of the most absorbent areas of your body. What you brush with matters. Many in our community are working to avoid unnecessary chemical exposure, support remineralization, and care for sensitive mouths.
We crafted Mouth Mud to meet that need: safe, simple ingredients for safe, simple oral care — backed by testing we can stand behind.
Who shouldn't use this?
Mouth Mud is safe and gentle for most users, but here are a few important notes:
• Children: Safe for children who are old enough to spit after brushing. While the formula is not harmful if a small amount is swallowed, younger children’s systems can be more sensitive. Always supervise young children during brushing.
• Allergies: If you have known sensitivities to any listed ingredients (Xylitol, Kaolin Clay, Calcium, Sodium Bicarbonate, Yarrow, Clove), please check with your healthcare provider before use.
• Dental treatment: If you are under active dental treatment consult your dentist to make sure it’s the right fit for you.
• Highly sensitive individuals: Though crafted to be gentle and free of essential oils and strong flavors, discontinue use if any irritation develops.
• Pets: Not for use with pets. Mouth Mud contains Xylitol, which is safe for human use but toxic to dogs. Keep out of reach of animals and never allow pets to ingest Mouth Mud.
Why You'll Feel The Difference
Mouth Mud skips the junk you’ll find in most toothpaste—no foaming agents, no SLS, no artificial flavors, and definitely no chemical whiteners. Just clean, simple minerals and herbs that polish gently and support your mouth’s natural balance. You’ll feel the difference from the very first brush.
Xylitol | Supports a cleaner, fresher mouth — See why:
Kaolin Clay + Baking Soda | Gently polishes without damaging enamel — See why:
USP Grade Kaolin Clay gives Mouth Mud its signature polish. This ultra-fine clay lifts away surface buildup, helping teeth feel clean and smooth—without the harsh abrasiveness found in many whitening products. We also include a small amount of baking soda to enhance the gentle cleansing effect and support a balanced oral environment. Together, they leave your mouth feeling naturally refreshed and polished.
Calcium Carbonate | Supports enamel strength and tooth integrity — See why:
Calcium is a key building block for strong teeth. The bioavailable form in Mouth Mud helps support your body’s natural enamel maintenance and encourages a healthy mineral balance. Regular use helps keep teeth resilient and naturally strong.
Yarrow + Clove | Traditionally used to support gum and oral health — See why:
Both Yarrow and Clove have long histories of use in oral care. Yarrow helps tone and soothe delicate gum tissue, while Clove offers protective properties and supports overall mouth balance. Together, they give Mouth Mud its subtle herbal edge—enhancing your routine naturally, without overwhelming flavors.

Common Questions, Honest Answers.
Where is Mouth Mud made?
We’re proud to partner with Beehive Botanicals, a small, family-owned facility in Wisconsin known for its integrity and attention to detail. They’re FDA-registered, NSF-certified, and regularly inspected—using methodical practices to ensure every batch of Mouth Mud meets the highest standards.
From there, our jars are shipped to our fulfillment team in Idaho—one of the few FDA-registered shipping facilities in the country. This means your order is stored in a clean, temperature-controlled environment until it reaches your door—not in overheated warehouses or bulk storage units.
We’ve chosen every partner with care so you can feel confident about what you’re putting in your mouth—because it matters. A lot.
Do you test for heavy metals?
Will this scratch my enamel?
We get this question a lot—and it’s an important one to address. The short answer? No—Mouth Mud will not scratch your enamel.
Here’s why: Scratching has to do with the relative hardness of materials, which is measured using the Mohs Hardness Scale (a scale geologists use to compare mineral hardness). Tooth enamel ranks about 5 on the Mohs scale.
Here’s how the key polishing ingredients in Mouth Mud compare:
• Kaolin Clay: 2–2.5 on the Mohs scale → far too soft to scratch enamel
• Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate): ~2.5 on the Mohs scale → far too soft to scratch enamel
• Activated Charcoal (used in Charcoal Mouth Mud): ~1–2 on the Mohs scale → even softer, not capable of scratching enamel In other words, all of these ingredients are much softer than your enamel.
They help lift away surface buildup and plaque through gentle polishing action—not abrasion.
By contrast, many conventional whitening toothpastes use abrasives that are much harder than enamel—causing gradual wear over time.
Mouth Mud is designed for safe, daily use—even for those with sensitive teeth or thin enamel. You’ll feel a polished, refreshed clean—without damage or worry.
Are ingredients organic?
We use organic or ecologically harvested herbs whenever possible—meaning ingredients that are grown or gathered with care for the environment, often going beyond what standard organic certification requires. In Mouth Mud, this applies to herbs like Yarrow and Clove.
For non-herbal ingredients—such as our Kaolin Clay, Xylitol, Calcium, and Baking Soda—we source exclusively from reputable pharmaceutical-grade suppliers. We require full documentation, verification of purity, and industry-recognized certifications from every supplier we work with. This is why we use USP Grade Kaolin Clay rather than cosmetic grade, and why every batch is tested for heavy metals before shipping.
That said, we are not currently USDA Certified Organic—not because we don’t value certification, but because we’d rather keep our products accessible than raise prices just to pay for a logo. As we grow, we are hopeful we’ll be able to absorb the cost of certification ourselves—without passing it onto our community.
In the meantime, we put our resources into what truly matters: the quality of every ingredient, the testing behind every jar, and the trust you place in us.
Who is formulating your creations?
Every formula is created by April Graham, a cultural herbalist with a lifelong connection to plant medicine and a worldwide community of learners. She founded Wild Wood Apothecary in 2014 as a way to support her mission of teaching herbalism freely—without hiding knowledge behind paywalls or selling generic white-label products.
April’s formulas are rooted in lived experience and built on years of deep herbal practice. They’re not trendy, outsourced blends—they’re thoughtfully crafted, experience-heavy creations made to support real people with real herbs, just as they’ve been used for generations.
What if it doesn’t work for me?
We know not every Mouth Mud variety is the perfect fit for every mouth. That’s why we offer store credit if you’d like to try a different variety. We do ask that you use your jar consistently for at least 30 days before deciding, as it can take time for your mouth to adjust—especially if you’re switching from conventional toothpaste. If after 30 days you’d like to try a different option, we’re happy to help. While we aren’t able to offer refunds as a small business, we’re committed to helping you find the best fit.
