History and Folklore

She has gone by many names over the years and has many relatives such as: Purple coneflower (E. purpurea), pale purple coneflower(E. pallida), Narrow-leaf purple coneflower(E. augustofolia),, Sampson root, American coneflower, Black Sampson, Black Susan, Comb flower, Hedgehog, Indian Head, Kansas snakeroot, Red sunflower, Rock-up-hat, Scurvy root, Snakeroot. Celtic nations once believed placing Echinacea in a locket would provide the wearer inner strength during trying times. Her name comes from the Greek word echinos, which describes the nature of a hedgehog or sea urchin, speaking to the bristly scales of her dried seed head.

 Habitat and Growth Information

Echinacea species are herbaceous, drought-tolerant perennial plants growing up to 140 cm or 4 feet, in height. They grow from taproots, except E. purpurea, which grows from a short caudex with fibrous roots. They have erect stems that in most species are unbranched. Native to the plains of North America, echinacea does not grow wild anywhere else in the world, but is widely cultivated, especially in Europe and the US.
